"I came to teach," I said, sitting up on the thin hospital mattress.
"Yes," Dane said, "you did."
"I'm a teacher," I repeated. "I went to the village to teach."
"You are," Dane Lindstrom nodded, looking at his notebook. "Start at the beginning."
"I already told someone else," I said. "But again—I'll tell you."
The fan above us whined. My voice sounded like the rustle of dry paper.

"What happened that night?" Dane asked.

"You killed him?" Dane's pen paused.

"Do you remember placing the knife in the sink?" Dane asked.
