"Adventurer Lea Yamaguchi is entering the single-player world now," the cold voice says as coffee spills onto the table.
"Excuse me?" I snap, because that's what people do when a voice announces their life. The cup tips. Brown rings spread across my notes.
"Adventurer Lea Yamaguchi is entering the single-player world now," the voice repeats, cheerfully detached.
"That's not funny," the waiter says from behind the counter. "You okay?"
"I—" I try to stand. My chair slides like it's on ice. My hand passes through the cup and the coffee keeps falling in midair and then it doesn't. My phone on the table flashes. The cafeteria light goes white for a fraction of a second.
"System integration in progress," the voice says. "Transfer complete in three... two..."
"Hey!" the waiter reaches across. His fingers sink through my forearm. He tries to pull me back and his face goes blank, like someone hit pause on him.
"Adventurer Lea Yamaguchi," the voice announces one last time.
I blink and the cafe is gone.
"Wake up, Lea," a child's voice sings. The door pounds like a drum. "White-feather Lea, wake up! Breakfast time!"
I open my eyes to a ceiling that is wrong. It is painted with cartoon clouds. The room smells faintly of pancakes. A stuffed bear stares from a shelf with one button eye missing.
"Who are you?" I say aloud, because talking helps me check that my mouth works.
